About Thornes Park Miniature Railway
Thornes Park Miniature Railway was originally founded by a small group of members who later became:The Wakefield Society of Model and Experimental Engineers.
Our first running line was a raised level track with an outer ground level track being laid some years later.
With the development of the surrounding area, it was voted that a ground level track should be laid entirely round the site. this progressed further into the scheme we have today,a line wrapped inside itself via a Diamond crossing,
Although shedding facilities were situated where our turntable now exists, it was also voted to reposition the shed due to flooding and open access to vandals.
Again, years later, it was decided by the society to add a 5"Gauge line whithin the 7.25"gauge line,to accomodate not only members smaller locomotives, but visiting locomotives from othe societies and clubs.this was completed in 1999.
As the railway is always expanding, the society decided to improve shed space and to aquire some form of workshop. This involved the demolition of the existing carriage shed and erecting a new structure, a 4 road shed with wheel drop and maintenance facilities.
All in all, with members departing, and joining, the W.S.M.E.E is an ever growing society, with a wide variety of locomotives and a permanent set of rolling stock.
new members are always welcome, but an 'induction' period is always obligitory, to show willing!
if you are interested in joining, please, don't hesitate.
Simply speak to a member at the railway and enquire about becoming a member, being made welcome is an understatment, if you have an interest in model engineering, railways or even 'playing trains',we'd love to hear from you!!!! |
